Consider the bloodiest conflict of the 20th century, the Great War.

The conflict was at a stalemate for years until the Australian General John Monash engineered a breakthrough at Villers-Bretenneux and Le Hamel. For years, the frontlines had barely moved a few hundred metres.

This truism is worth bearing in mind when considering the conflict in Ukraine.
